Tensed
Pop. 126

Settled during the era of Father Pierre-Jean DeSmet’s Sacred Heart Mission in the St. Joe River Valley, Tensed was initially dubbed DeSmet in honor of this now historical figure. As the town grew, area residents applied for postal services. However, since another Idaho community was already named DeSmet, postal authorities rejected the request. Trying again, the residents reversed the spelling of their town’s name and submitted a request for a post office in “Temsed.” Authorities approved the post office in 1914, but an error occurred during processing, changing the name to its final state as Tensed.
