Basalt
Pop. 419

Basalt was founded in 1885 as a Mormon settlement and was originally known as Cedar Point. When railroad services reached the area in 1889, railroad officials renamed the community Monroe, which was then changed to Basalt in 1903. The present name reflects the area’s landscape of basalt rock formations lining the Snake River.
